Jason Vorhees is possibly one of horror's greatest creations.
Well known (and feared) by many, and an overall great bad guy. He
has enjoyed over ten sequels to his popular (and some might say overexploited)
franchise. He is a madman - big, bad, brutal, and butchers teens
by the score. He was not, however, the series' original bad guy -
he only arose in episode two (which has a HUGE bodycount). NO . .
. . Jason is NOT in the first film. But that does not diminish it
in the slightest. On the contrary, it further enhances its terror
factor. In the sequels you can see the evil; in this, evil is hidden
from the viewer. This film is really a starting point in respect
to the sequels. This film is like a prologue, a taster of times ahead.
The plot is hardly inspiring: psycho kills teens at a campsite because
of a past accident. Death, blood, and frights follow, and we get
a good ending (really good in respect to how it seamlessly allows for number
2 to follow on). The gore is good. Throats are slit, necks
are stabbed through, heads cleaved in two by axes, and people pinned to
doors with arrows. All are graphic, gory, and well presented.
Overall I think this film is a milestone. It set a trend that all
films could follow for success. If you need a good stalk and slash
movie, look no further. This is the MOTHER of all horror films. |
