Been a very long time since we've had a sign of life from this franchise.  Apparently, according to the Hollywood Reporter, New Line Cinema have signed David R. Ellis (Final Destination 2, Cellular) to direct and develop the fourth film fo the franchise.  It is said it will be shot in 3D, but that was also said for the previous film.  Whenever the Writers' Guild strike ends, Eric Bress (co-scribe on Final Destination 2), will script this sequel as well.  This installment will feature an all-new cast of characters with a stand alone story trying to cheat death.

Dread Central has some rumored news that should impact Final Destnation fans.  Apparently, the franchise's creators have reached a parting of the ways following their rough time re-making Black Christmas.  Here's what Dread Central had to say:

I don’t care how many detractors it has ? the new Black Christmas keeps looking better and better (we’re talking the director of the bitchin’ Willard remake here, people). The duo involved has done some great things in our genre over the years, and I can't wait to see what more they bring with the new remake.

Which brings us to some incredibly sad news: Word has it that the production suffered a whirlwind of behind-the-scenes tension (not surprising, considering the Dimension Films label), which has led to the worst case scenario: Writer/directors Glen Morgan and James Wong have parted ways.

So why is this news so tragic? Morgan and Wong are the unsung visionaries responsible for creating "The X-Files" mythos during its glory years, responsible for, among others, the notorious cannibal episode "Home". They wrote the brilliant second season of "Millennium". Together they’ve produced some of the most intelligent and creative genre work of the past decade and while they’ve certainly had success off the small screen, we had yet to see a feature that truly showed off their talents. Sadly, if the rumors are true, it looks like we never will.

Bloody Disgusting reports that FD4 is very much a possiblity, but in light of the aforementioned news, Wong & Morgan probably aren't going to be involved.  After FD3, I view that as a positive, and hopefully, some fresh ideas will be injected this time around.

New Line Cinema is happy- very happy actually as Final Destination 3 has pulled in over $113 million worldwide in box office business alone. Tonight I had a conversation with 'Dr. Anonymous' who informed me that the studio is looking into developing a fourth film in the franchise that kicked off in March of 2000 and altogether grossed over $300 million worldwide at the box office. Details are slim at this point of Final Destination 4 as things are still in the "talking" phase, but we'll keep you posted as more news comes in. Anyone for the return of Devon Sawa? I know I am!

Kind of hard for Devon Sawa to return when his character was declared and confirmed dead in Final Destination 2.

DVDActive has posted the full specs for the Final Destination 3 DVD.  Despite the fact that the first two films were released as Platinum Series and InfiniFilm editions, respectively, and that this one is a definite special edition - it's been saddled with the gimmicky "2-Disc Thrill Ride Edition" moniker.  Whatever the case, the features sound good and interesting.  Here are the details:

New Line Home Entertainment has announced  Final Destination 3 which stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Ryan Merriman. This latest horror sequel will be available to own from the 25th July, in seperate widescreen and full screen releases. Each will carry English Dolby Digital 5.1 EX, DTS 6.1 ES and Stereo Surround tracks. Extras will include commentary by director and co-writer James Wong, co-writer Glen Morgan and director of photography Robert Mclachlan, a Choose-Their-Fate Interactive feature, an It’s All Around You animated short (looking at death statistics), and a Dead Teenager Movie featurette that looks at the teen horror genre. Completing the package will be a Kill Shot: The Making of Final Destination 3 documentary, a Planned Accidents featurette, a "Police Station" deleted scene, and the theatrical trailer.

Final Destination 3 opened the weekend of February 10th with $19.1 million - the biggest opening of the franchise.  Final Destination opened in mid-March of 2000 with only $10 million, but went on to make $53 million.  Final Destination 2 opened bigger with $16 million at the end of January, 2003, but reached only $46.9 million.    Domestically, Final Destination 3 brought in $53.7 million, and garnered a worldwide total of $90.5 million.  I would say it's fairly all right to say that there's a chance for an FD4.  You can view the cover art for the widescreen & fullscreen editions of FD3 below.
