"FREDDY vs. JASON" [2003 - New Line Cinema]
by Justin Klotz

On Thursday, the 14th of August, the whole northeastern U.S. lost total electric power.  This was one day before the movie I was looking most forward to was to come out, "Freddy vs. Jason".  I was totally bummed and getting angry and sad to the point of punching something.  I swore to god, if this movie did not live up to my expectations, I would set the New Line building on fire.

Oh boy... Did this film go PAST my expectations.

This film is definitely the most entertaining and fun movie to come out this summer.  It focuses around Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) being stuck in hell and trying to find a way out.  He comes up with this devious idea to resurrect Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger), the masked madman who hunts teens around Camp Crystal Lake.  Freddy's idea is to send Jason to Springwood to scare the living hell out of the people living there, so he can get enough power to invade people's dreams and wreak havoc.  Everything goes according to plan, until . . . Jason doesn't stop killing.  He is literally on a rampage on Elm Street.  Eventually, Freddy gets enough power to do what he does best: kill.  But at one point in the movie, Jason gets Freddy extremely pissed.  On top of that, a group of teens, Lori (Monica Keena), Will (Jason Ritter), Kia (Kelly Rowland), and a bunch of other disposable teens, devise a way to get the two horror icons to fight.  Their plan succeeds, but with many a casualty.  Freddy and Jason have the bloodiest fight to EVER grace the big screen.  The only way to see who wins is to see the film for yourself.

The action in this film was relentless.  Hack there, slash there, hack here, slash there.  This film hardly gives you a second to breath in the fight sequences.  It succeeds in keeping you in your seat to see who and how the next person is killed.  If you are a person with a weak stomach or heart, I really suggest you give second thoughts to see this film.  Everything in here is BRUTAL.

The script was definitely lacking in intelligence - dialogue-wise.  The acting and dialogue by the teens is mediocre at best.  It's really corny, but in a good, 80's kind of way.  The best acting and dialogue definitely goes to Robert Englund, who portrayed Freddy in the best acting in any of the Nightmare films.  Ken does pretty good here with his body actions . . . This guy can swing his machete with power!

The idea behind this film is genius.  Mark Swift and Damian Shannon did a wonderful job finding a way to get everything to work well in this movie.  But it could of definitely been rewritten in some of the scenes.

The nudity and gore in this movie was high.  I haven't seen much of these in horror movies lately, so it was refreshing to see lots of tits and dismembered bodies in a modern movie.

Now, what everyone is wondering about . . . the fight.  This is literally the most brutal, bloody, surprising, funny, and outrageous fight to ever appear on screen.  You will not be disappointed by this fight.  By the way, I'm gonna make sure that anybody else who saw this movie, will not spoil the ending.  There is definitely a winner . . . but the last shot of the movie does leave things open for a sequel.

Overall, this film was everything I wanted and more in a horror film.  Ronny Yu and Sean S. Cunningham succeeded in making a fun, summer horror movie everyone can enjoy.  If you are a regular movie-goer that's weary of this film, see it anyways.  There's a good chance you'll end up applauding the film at the end.  If you are a huge fan of either series, this is THE movie you've been waiting over a decade for.  This film is one of the most important movies in horror history.  You will not forget this film...
