"HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY" [1981 - Fulvia Film / Almi Pictures] - 9 out of 10
By Daryl Hobson

Before Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Chucky, Michael, and Pinhead, there was a different way of expressing horror.  It couldn't stalk its victims, it was silent, unmoving, decaying.  It was the haunted house.  They ooze dread.  Horror is best served in a horrific set.  This film has that all the way through.  If you then throw in a zombie / ghoul doctor who lives in the house's basement and kills his victims to sustain his decaying frame . . . . then you have a horror movie.  There is only one flaw in this film.  It is dubbed, so all the voice overs are incredibly bad.  The child is REALLY bad.  His voice is not bad, it is painful.  The gore in this film, though limited, is great, a show stopping moment each time.  The zombie / ghoul doctor is really sinister as well, his presence is disturbing, as well is his methods of dealing death.  He is a withered, old corpse, yet he manages to rip open throats like a strongman.  I thoroughly enjoyed this film.  It was brilliant, gore was great, and storyline had some great twists.  I was shocked out of my seat more than once.  That is a rarity.  I wholeheartedly advise this as a horror fan!
