Phantasm is quite an old film. It looks it as well, it hasn't aged well,
where other films last for years and maintain a strong impact ("The Texas
Chain Saw Massacre"). This film looks dated, and isn't as shocking
as it was at the time when it was released. The tameness of it is
really off-putting. If it was updated it would be brilliant, but
that isn't going to happen any time soon. The film has been slagged
off so far, but I felt that was deserved, it also gives me time to tell
you all about the good aspects of this film. Like the bad guy.
The TALL MAN is a terrifying enemy, and he lights up the screen, he is
old and looks frail, but he possesses amazing strength and cunning.
The gore is generally good, as I have said it is dated, but it could still
hold its own against today's offerings. The metal balls are a great
part of this film as well. They float in the air and hunt their prey,
disposing of them with an array of deadly blades, drills and spikes.
These balls provide the chase sequences and are cool to watch. I
like this film, it is original, but dated, if you see it I can recommend
it, but only to horror fans, because others will be disappointed.
