Well,
after a long hiatus where I was plagued with a lack of drive, ambition,
and inspiration, I have returned with a series of smaller projects.
For whatever reason, I finally chose to delve into HIGHLANDER for the first
time. I've always wanted to do a HIGHLANDER trailer or music video
filled with music from Queen. Though, considering what has been the
downfall of every trailer I've attempted to create this year, I didn't
want to go into another lengthy project. So, TV spots would be a
nice, short project that would not require a long term dedication.
This was not an inspiration for them, but the TV spots for the STAR WARS
prequels are a good comparison here. Each spot focusing on a single
character, and that's definitely what I've done here.
The first one is for the Kurgan - perfectly portrayed
by Clancy Brown. Featuring the villian of the film, I had an abundance
of impressive material to draw on, and the Kurgan is seen in all his forms
here. Obviosuly, I used "Gimmie The Prize (Kurgan's Theme)" for this
one, and I love this song for its harder edge. Freddie Mercury's
vocals are delivered with the same evil charisma as Clancy Brown delivered
the performance of the Kurgan. This spot really came together rather
easily, and only a slight bit of rearranging was needed. Also, I
wanted these spots to deliver a little more than just an action showcase
for the characters, and so, some plot-driven dialogue was utilized as well
with Ramirez stating that if Kurgan wins the Prize, the world would be
suffer an eternity of darkness. As of right now, this is my favorite
spot of the two that have been completed.
The second spot focuses on Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez
(Sean Connery). This was more difficult. Mainly because all
of the Ramirez scenes are either expositional or action oriented, and there
isn't nearly as much footage of him as there is of the Kurgan. Also,
I had to re-edit and rearrange most everything several times to get right
flow, and for all the dialogue to be comfortable spaced out. I originally
wanted to use "A Kind of Magic" here, but with the visuals, it just wouldn't
be suitable. So, I chose the definitive HIGHLANDER theme - "Princes
of the Universe." Still, I ended up doing two edits of the music
here. The first had less vocals, but I felt it didn't satisfy.
Once I heard Mercury's vocals come in, I wanted more of it present, and
so, it forced a re-edit of msot everything. This is the best version
of this spot, and I'm satisfied with it.
The rest of the spots will be online sometime in the near
future along with a possible second Kurgan spot. Until then, enjoy
these two....
